He/She is head of Medical Department and responsible directly to Master. Oversees and manages the medical department onboard, performs routine and emergency care to guests and crew. Diagnosing and treating medical conditions, disorders and diseases through the application of specialist medical skills and knowledge. Undertakes guest and crew consultations and physical examinations.
He/She is responsible for the following:
• Respond to patients’ medical problems by referring to their history, carrying out diagnosis, treatment, counseling, and referral, where necessary.
• Always maintain confidentiality and impartiality.
• Collect, record, and maintain sensitive patient information such as examination results, medical history, and reports.
• Explain procedures or prescribed treatments to patients.
• Keep up to date with medical developments, treatment, and medication.
• Participate in landings, provide medical support / immediate emergency medical care to pax, expedition staff & crew during landings
• Monitor and safeguard the general health and hygiene of pax, expedition staff & crew
• Flexibility, availability, and affability, with a teamwork attitude
• Shall ensure that all safety, security, and environmental regulations are respected as per Company SMS/procedures involving medical team and/or related to the medical aspects.
• Examines all pre-embarkation health documents of embarking crew to verify the documented health and fitness of new crewmembers, reporting any issues to the Master.
• Responsible for timely fulfilling ship’s Maritime Health declaration and reporting ship’s personnel (pax & crew) health condition to local authorities – MHD.
• Responsible for controlling and updating MSDS folder – Ship’s Hospital.
• Prior departure to fulfil positive report.
• Advises the Master of any emergency case requiring shore side attention or intervention unavailable on board.
• Doctor is not to accompany guest / crew member to hospital for medical landing
without Captain’s or DPA approval, depending on circumstances (usually to be done by TEL who most of the time speak required language or Cruise Director).
• Responsible for narcotics control, distribution and disposal of expired ones as well as to keep updated narcotics log records.
• Responsible for regular checking the Eye Wash stations & 1st aid Boxes, as well as keeping written record of weekly/monthly inspections accordingly.
• Maintain ship’s medicines inventory list (dispense all expired medication as per regulation). Ensures that all medications and drugs are maintained on a First-in-First-Out rotation.
• Responsible for ordering and keeping proper stock (not to overstock).
• Responsible for control of expiration dates.
• Responsible for proper inventory count and control of consumption (able to give explanation end of the month)
• Proper administration of medication and treatments given to crew and pax, and to fill all necessary documents for Front desk
• Before of FW bunkering, a sample of the water shall be collected from the hose during replenishment and analysed by the Doctor. Sampling containers will be supplied by the Doctor. Crewmembers collecting these samples shall be properly trained by the Doctor to perform these duties.
• Responsible for Medical Waste and Sharp Containers, Waste log to be done weekly or every two weeks as per demand. A request of the special medical waste disposal service to be done one week in advance via email to the Chief Officer.
